A card that reads 'no memory card', 'card error', or shows zero photos after a shoot is usually a file-system or controller problem, not erased data. The single most important thing is to stop shooting on that card. Every new frame written is a frame written over your originals.
Flash cards do not overwrite in place the way people expect, but cameras aggressively reuse free space and rewrite the file allocation table on every shot. If you accidentally formatted a card or the camera says the card is empty, pull it out of the camera and set it aside. Do not shoot 'just a couple test frames' to check it. Do not let a phone or camera reformat it. The recoverability of a formatted card drops sharply the moment new data lands on it.
'Card error' or 'card cannot be accessed' after a battery died mid-write usually means an interrupted directory update — highly recoverable, because the image data is intact and only the index is broken.
