The drive inside is usually fine — the enclosure isn't
On a portable external drive, the most common failure isn't the disk at all: it's the USB bridge that connects it. Dropping the enclosure kills the board, or the micro-USB port tears loose from the solder pads. In those cases the data is sitting there intact behind broken electronics, and recovery is a matter of getting past the bridge safely. Some modern external drives complicate this, because the bridge itself performs hardware encryption. Pull the disk out of an encrypting enclosure and you get ciphertext. We identify which type you have before doing anything irreversible.
Flash drives and memory cards
USB sticks and SD cards use raw NAND with a controller managing wear. When that controller faults, the card shows as 0 bytes or prompts you to format it — do not format it. Physical breaks at the connector are repairable at the board level. Worn or degraded NAND is a chip-level job, and for those cases we evaluate the device and tell you honestly whether it belongs with a specialist partner and what that costs. Camera and dash-cam cards get an extra step: video and RAW formats need format-aware carving to come back playable rather than as fragments.

Not necessarily. That message usually means the controller isn't presenting the NAND, not that the data is erased. Stop plugging it in and bring it in for evaluation.
Windows wants to format my SD card. Should I?
No. Formatting is the fastest way to make a recoverable card harder to recover. Eject it and bring it to us.
Can you recover a snapped-off USB connector?
Usually. Connector and pad damage is board-level repair work, which we handle in-house. Worn NAND or a dead controller may need a specialist partner — we'll tell you which up front.
Do you cover encrypted external drives?
Yes, with the caveat that encryption changes what's possible. Bring any passwords, keys, or recovery phrases you have — they're used for your case only and not retained afterward.
