Try this once, then stop
Plug it into a different USB port - ideally a rear port on a desktop, which is powered directly from the board. Then try one different computer. That distinguishes a dead drive from a dead port or a driver problem.
Check disk management (Disk Management on Windows, Disk Utility on macOS) to see whether the drive appears there even without a drive letter. A device that appears with the wrong capacity, or as an unallocated 0 MB device, tells you the controller is responding but its mapping is corrupt - useful information for a lab.
If nothing appears anywhere, stop. Nothing you can do at a desk changes a hardware fault, and repeated insertion stresses a connector that may already be cracked.
Why flash drives fail so abruptly
There are no moving parts, so failures are electrical rather than mechanical. Three causes dominate.
The controller chip fails. This is the small processor that translates between USB and the raw NAND, and it also holds the wear-levelling map that says where each block of your file physically lives. When it dies, the memory is intact but unreadable through the normal interface.
The solder joints at the connector crack. Flash drives get levered sideways in ports, in bags and in pockets, and the joints eventually fatigue. This is the intermittent case - works when held at an angle, fails when released.
The NAND wears out. Consumer flash memory has a finite number of write cycles, and cheap drives used as working storage rather than transfer media do reach it.
What not to do
- Do not accept a format prompt. Formatting rewrites the file system on a drive whose real problem is elsewhere.
- Do not run vendor "repair" or "low-level format" utilities. Several of these rewrite the controller firmware and erase the translation table, which is the one thing a lab needs.
- Do not keep re-inserting it repeatedly. If the joints are cracked, you are working them apart.
- Do not open the casing and try to resolder it unless you genuinely do fine-pitch rework. A lifted pad turns a straightforward job into a difficult one.
What a lab does
If the fault is a cracked connector joint, it is repaired under a microscope and the drive is imaged immediately. If the controller has failed, the usual route is chip-off: the NAND package is removed from the board, read directly on a specialised reader, and the raw dump is then reassembled in software - undoing the interleaving, ECC and wear-levelling scheme that specific controller used. That reconstruction is the real work, and it is why controller-failure cases take longer than a simple deleted-file recovery.
Monolithic drives - where the controller and NAND are a single moulded package, common in very small or very cheap drives - are harder, because there is no separate chip to remove. They are often still recoverable through test pads on the package, but not always.
